Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari (Meadow Mari: олык марий пылвомыш вате-влак, Russian: небесные жёны луговых мари, translit. Nebesnye zheny lugovykh mari) is a 2012 Russian comedy-drama directed by Aleksei Fedorchenko. The film was shot in Mari language and tells 23 different tales influenced by the Mari folklore.
Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari is the third film in the tandem between the writer Denis Osokin and director Aleksei Fedorchenko. The film both continues and departs from their earlier works, Silent Souls and Shosho. Like their previous films, Celestial Wives proved a festival success, receiving prizes at both Russian and international festivals.

But if we consider Celestial Wives to be a kind of living showcase, Fedorchenko’s contribution to the excavation and revivification of Mari culture and religion (perhaps a cinematic museum exhibit called “Weird Sex on the Volga”), then the film’s faults are completely forgivable.
